Research statement
My research attempts to find ways of using software to deepen the musical knowledge of its users, through practical and performance interaction. It is driven by the following questions:
Are there common musical gestures (a lexicon) behind the work of contemporary improvisers (Bailey, E.Parker, Jarrett, Taylor, Braxton) and composers (Ligeti, Finnissy, Xenakis)? Could a software system be built, to help composers/improvisers to deeper understand this lexicon, and improve their own? Would building such a system give us new insight into how musical lexicons emerge and influence each other? Could they help us discover more about our own musical practice?
